There are several great initiatives happening across Eastern Ontario to promote Green Business. Here are a few initiatives to take note of:
Sustainable Enterprise Alliance
This partnership of businesses and enterprises across the Ottawa area is revamping in 2015 to promote Buy Local initiatives. The Sustainable Enterprise Alliance was originally launched after the National Capital Environmental Non-profit Network (NCENN) hosted a collaborative session about working with businesses on sustainability. There was so much interest and enthusiasm at this time, that a core team of business owners began meeting regularly to explore programs and opportunities for promoting green business around Ottawa. The NCENN continued to liaise with this group and hold occasional joint events to support each other. www.sustainableenterprisealliance.ca
Green Business Peterborough
To promote local green business in the Peterborough area, the Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce and GreenUP, launched the Green Business Peterborough Program.
“The program will recognize businesses that have pledged to and have implemented strategies to reduce waste, save energy, and adopt sustainable business practices.
Any business can become greener. A wide variety of sustainable practices can be put in place that will result in significant improvement to the workplace. Energy efficiency and other sustainable practices frequently offer long-term cost savings, allowing businesses to contribute to the community while becoming more economically competitive.” www.greenbusinesspeterborough.ca
This program of EnviroCentre, helps Ottawa businesses reduce their carbon footprint. It is a local partner of the province-wide Sustainability CoLab program.
“The program uses a membership model where member organizations are plugged in to a local network, supported in setting a target and celebrated for progress made towards economic and environmental results.” www.envirocentre.ca/energy/carbon613
Green Chamber Initiative – Brockville
One of the longest standing programs to promote greening within an Eastern Ontario Chamber of Commerce is through the Brockville & District Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber has been in existence since 1906 and continues to address emerging issues, including sustainability.
“The Brockville and District Chamber of Commerce is part of a network of Chambers of Commerce and Boards of Trade that exist in virtually every community across Ontario and Canada. The Chamber network consists of 65,000 businesses provincially and 170,000 businesses nationally. Locally, the Chamber has over 450 members and is recognized as this area’s official “Voice of Business.” This voice is an effective force in influencing issues and legislation affecting your business and our community. It is a membership based and not-for-profit association that is led by an elected volunteer Board of Directors.” www.brockvillechamber.com
